2026 has been a stacked year for movies. Christopher Nolan gave us The Odyssey. Steven Spielberg dropped Disclosure Day. Spider-Man: Brand New Day crossed $2 billion worldwide. And Avengers: Doomsday is about to bring the biggest crossover Marvel has ever attempted.
And still, the movie I've been counting down to all year is Dune: Part Three.
This is the end of the road for Villeneuve
Denis Villeneuve has been clear about this for years. Back in 2024, he told Time that "Dune Messiah should be the last Dune movie for me." He has stuck to it. By the time Part Three opens on December 18, he'll have spent close to a decade writing and directing all three films back to back, according to The A.V. Club, and his next stop is reportedly the next James Bond film.
That changes how I'm walking into this one. It isn't a middle chapter. It's the closing statement from one of the best directors working today, on the project he's spent most of his career dreaming about.
A different kind of Dune
Don't expect a replay of Part Two. Villeneuve has described the new film as "more of a thriller. A more intense story," with a different rhythm than the first two. Adapted from Frank Herbert's Dune Messiah, co-written with Brian K. Vaughan, and set years after the events of Part Two, this is the chapter where the hero's story turns darker and more personal. That's exactly the kind of risk I want a filmmaker to take at the end of a trilogy.
Even Timothée Chalamet put it simply at a recent trailer event: "in Denis we trust."
The decade's best trilogy?
Think about the run so far. Dune (2021) made around $410 million worldwide while streaming at home on the same day. Dune: Part Two (2024) climbed to roughly $714 million and became the new benchmark for what a blockbuster can look and sound like. Every entry has been bigger, bolder and better than the last.
If Part Three sticks the landing, I don't think it's a stretch to call this the best film trilogy of the decade. Few franchises in modern memory have been made by one director, with one vision, from start to finish. That's what makes this rare, and that's why I'll be in an IMAX seat on opening night.
Why Dune wins my December
Doomsday will probably win the box office weekend; the presale numbers say so. But Dune is the one I'll be thinking about on the drive home. Big spectacle is everywhere in 2026. A filmmaker finishing his masterpiece on his own terms is not.
See you on Arrakis. And if you're making it a Dunesday double feature, gear up for both.
